Example of Dublin LL evaluation of Acidification potential reduction improving bicycling (Scenario 2)

On April 2, 2014, the EU is taking another important step in reducing transport emissions by adopting the European Declaration on Cycling.

The declaration recognizes cycling as a sustainable, accessible, and affordable means of transport, with strong added value for the EU economy. It includes clear commitments, such as safe and coherent cycling networks in cities, better links with public transport and secure parking spaces and access to recharging points for e-bikes. These commitments shall be taken at EU, national regional and local level. These are all necessary elements in improving the quality and quantity of cycling infrastructure across Member States and making cycling more attractive to the public.

Based on a proposal launched by the Commission in October 2023 and responding to requests from the European Parliament and Member States, the declaration constitutes a joint political commitment and a strategic compass for existing and future policies and initiatives related to cycling.

I-CHANGE Genoa Living Lab uses cycling of 60 bikers from the Turchino amateur sports association to monitor the climate. On the hills of Mele, above Voltri, and in the Genoese hinterland, they retraced a path network abandoned for years and are volunteers for scientific research in I-CHANGE. Through a “weather tracker” installed on the handlebars, they track a series of data that could also improve the quality of short and very short-term weather forecasts.

I-CHANGE introduce improving of bicycle infrastructure as a measure in traffic management scenario and related carbon and environmental footprint reductions scenarios in Bologna and Dublin areas. It is assumed that city authorities will enhance the overall bicycle infrastructure (which includes the provision of bike lanes segregated from road traffic) wherever possible and that all “residential/ service/ living roads” would have speed limits reduced to 30 km/hr. In the above figure the results of the measure on Acidification potential are reported for Dublin in the central area affected by the measures.
