Policy Recommendations
I-CHANGE produced three own policy briefs and contributed to a collaborative one of the Green Deal Support Office on citizen science and EU regulations. These briefs draw on extensive research, project deliverables, and stakeholder dialogues, offering clear policy recommendations that highlight the importance of integrated modelling, citizen engagement, and citizen science in driving sustainable behavioural change and supporting effective climate policy.
Integrated Modeling Chain for Tailored Interventions
Published: April 2025
This policy brief highlights the importance of the Integrated Modelling Chain in evaluating and tailoring urban mobility interventions. By simulating behavioural impacts on emissions and air quality, the the Integrated Modelling Chain enables policymakers to design data-driven, region-specific strategies for reducing carbon footprints and improving urban environments.
Citizen Science for Multi-Risk Applications and Behavioural Change
Policy Brief underscoring the transformative potential of citizen science in multi-risk environmental monitoring and behavioural change. It advocates for the use of technological and participatory tools – such as Smart Citizen Kits, data-sharing platforms, and gamified engagement techniques – to empower individuals and communities. The recommendations stress the need for localised citizen science initiatives, robust data validation methods, and sustained institutional support to ensure long-term effectiveness.
EU-level Learnings How to Improve European Citizens’ Behavioural Shift Towards Sustainable Lifestyles
Published: April 2025
Policy brief focusing on enhancing European citizens’ involvement in climate action through strategic stakeholder engagement, inclusive communication, and participatory initiatives such as Living Labs. By fostering collaboration between communities, researchers, and policymakers, these efforts help bridge knowledge gaps, promote sustainable behaviours, and ensure policies reflect local realities. Key recommendations include the development of stakeholder engagement frameworks, integration of citizen science into education, and the use of adaptive communication strategies to maximise outreach and impact.
Citizen science and EU regulations – a new approach
Published: December 2024
This policy brief outlines the opportunity available to the European Commission, The Council of the European Union and the European Parliament, to scale up and integrate proven citizen science research outputs into new implementation mechanisms for EU Environmental Law. It proposes a route map that would support this process and suggests a review of existing and proposed EU Environmental law to ensure that the opportunity is fully exploited. The brief also outlines the cost and data benefits for such an approach and indicates why involving citizens is likely to accelerate behaviour change in support of EU Environmental Policy.
